Parts of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s emergency department could move temporarily into a modular building during planned refurbishment works.
Part of the emergency department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital could temporarily move into a modular building while refurbishment work is carried out.
The hospital has submitted a planning application for a temporary facility in Car Park I, close to the existing emergency department entrance.
The building would remain on the site for up to 12 months and allow urgent services to continue while work is carried out inside the current department.
Plans show the single-storey facility would be made up of four modular sections covering around 250 square metres.
It would contain a reception, patient assessment areas, trolley bays, waiting space and toilets.
Hospital planners say the temporary accommodation would allow patients who need urgent treatment to continue to be assessed safely while refurbishment is under way.
The proposal would result in the temporary loss of 42 spaces from Car Park I.
The Norfolk and Norwich currently has around 850 patient and visitor parking spaces across the hospital site, although it warns parking can already be difficult at peak times.
The application was submitted to the local planning authority in early October and remains under consideration.
If approved, the hospital hopes to begin installing the temporary modules in November.
