Gorleston’s Ocean Room has been sold for £500,000, with its new owner planning to demolish and redevelop the seafront site.
Gorleston’s historic Ocean Room has been sold for £500,000, paving the way for a major redevelopment of the seafront site.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council has agreed the sale to Ocean Pavilion, a subsidiary of Bespoke Construction Group, following around a year of negotiations.
The former nightclub and entertainment venue closed in 2024 after its previous operator went into administration.
Over the decades, the Ocean Room hosted a number of major acts, including Pink Floyd, Blur and Cream, and became a familiar part of Gorleston’s nightlife.
The new owner plans to demolish the existing building, which has significant structural problems, and replace it with a new leisure development.
Early ideas include a soft play centre, indoor games and entertainment space, a café and a wellness centre and spa.
However, detailed proposals have not yet been finalised and no formal planning application has been submitted.
The developer says it recognises the emotional attachment many local people have to the Ocean Room and has promised consultation with the community as its plans develop.
The building began life as the Floral Hall in 1939 and forms part of the distinctive historic character of Gorleston seafront.
The new owners say they hope the redevelopment will create a year-round attraction and begin a new chapter for the prominent site.
