A possible piece of unexploded ordnance discovered on Caister beach is no longer visible after being covered by the incoming tide.
The unidentified object was discovered by a novice metal detectorist on Saturday afternoon.
HM Coastguard was called to the scene at around 3.45pm and an area of the beach was cordoned off while the object was assessed.
Images and information about the find were passed to specialists, with Norfolk Police and Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams also informed.
The incoming tide subsequently covered the object before specialists were able to fully examine it.
Coastguard rescue teams returned to the beach on Sunday morning in an attempt to locate it again but were unable to find the item.
Authorities have described it as a possible piece of ordnance and its exact nature has not been confirmed.
Caister and the surrounding coastline has a significant military history, particularly from the Second World War, when coastal defences and minefields were established along parts of the Norfolk coast.
People who discover suspected ammunition or explosives are advised not to touch or move them and instead move away from the area and contact the emergency services.
Police and specialist teams have been made aware of the discovery.
