Watton Town Council has committed to restoring its High Street clock tower, with repairs planned before the clock chimes again.
Watton’s historic High Street clock could soon chime again after the town council committed to carrying out repairs.
The Grade II-listed Clock Tower dates from 1679 and has been a prominent feature in the centre of the Norfolk town for more than three centuries.
However, the clock has been silent for around 10 years because of continuing problems with the mechanism and the condition of the building.
Before further work can be carried out on the clock itself, structural problems affecting the tower need to be addressed.
Inspections have identified repairs which are required to the historic building, including concerns about cracking and deterioration to parts of the structure.
Watton Town Council says specialist heritage contractors are now being brought in as the restoration process moves forward.
Once the tower has been made secure, attention can turn to restoring the clock mechanism and bringing its familiar chimes back to the High Street.
The current clock dates from the early 19th century, while the tower itself was built in 1679 and later altered.
More than £20,000 has already been spent servicing and repairing the clock during the past 15 years.
Town mayor Sarah Humphries says the landmark is an important part of Watton’s heritage and the council has a responsibility to protect it for future generations.
