Repairs have been approved for Norwich’s fire-damaged former Cat and Fiddle pub after a cannabis factory was discovered inside there.
Repairs have been approved for a Grade II-listed former Norwich pub which was badly damaged in a major fire last year.
The blaze broke out at the former Cat and Fiddle on Magdalen Street in June 2025, forcing neighbouring buildings to be evacuated and closing part of the road for around a week.
The fire, which destroyed sections of the roof, was later blamed on an electrical fault. Nobody was injured.
Once the building had been made safe, investigators discovered around 40 cannabis plants and hydroponic growing equipment inside.
Norfolk Police investigated but no arrests were made, and the criminal investigation has since been closed.
Norwich City Council has now approved proposals to repair the historic building.
Work will include replacing damaged roof areas and carrying out remedial repairs designed to make the property safe, secure and weather-tight.
Planning documents say there are no proposals to significantly alter its internal layout, with the work instead intended to restore the building to its previous condition.
The Cat and Fiddle is believed to date from the 18th century and in recent years had been converted to include flats.
