A11 Closed For Major Thickthorn Bridge Installation

Friday, 18 September 2026 16:11

Drivers are being warned of major A11 disruption this weekend as a new bridge is installed near Norwich's Thickthorn junction.

Drivers are being warned to expect major disruption on the A11 near Norwich during a full weekend closure.

The road will be shut in both directions between Wymondham and Thickthorn Junction from 8pm on Friday 18 September until 6am on Monday 21 September.

National Highways is installing a new bridge over the A11 as part of its major redevelopment of the Thickthorn Junction.

The structure will eventually carry the new Cantley Lane Link Road, connecting Cantley Lane South with the B1172 Norwich Road.

Large cranes will be used to lift sections of the bridge into position, with National Highways saying the work cannot safely take place while traffic is using the A11.

All side roads joining the A11 along the affected section will also be closed.

Signed diversions will take non-HGV traffic via Thetford, the A1066 through Diss, the A140 and the A47.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area where possible and allow additional time for essential journeys.

The wider Thickthorn improvement scheme is currently expected to cost between £216 million and £239 million and aims to reduce congestion and improve connections between the A11 and A47.
