A Norfolk charity is expanding its accessible boating service after an anonymous donation funded a second vessel for disabled passengers.
A Norfolk charity providing accessible boat trips is expanding its fleet after receiving an anonymous donation.
The Norfolk Charitable Trust currently operates Poppy, a specially designed wheelchair-accessible boat offering free trips around Blakeney Harbour for disabled people, their families and carers.
The vessel includes an accessible boarding ramp and space for wheelchair users, allowing people who might otherwise struggle to access the water to enjoy wildlife and coastal trips.
Demand for the service has grown significantly, with the charity expecting to operate more than 80 free trips this year.
An anonymous donation has now enabled the trust to commission a larger second vessel called Poppy Freedom.
The new boat will accommodate groups of up to 12 people, including wheelchair users, people with other mobility needs, family members and carers.
It is being designed with level boarding, secure wheelchair positions and additional space to make moving around the vessel easier.
The charity says the larger boat will allow it to accommodate families, care homes, day centres and community organisations which may currently be too large for Poppy.
Poppy Freedom is expected to be completed later this year before beginning trips from Morston Quay during 2027.
The trust says its aim is to make Norfolk’s coastal environment accessible to as many people as possible.
