Diss Struggles To Tackle Pigeon Problem

Monday, 14 September 2026 10:27

Diss Town Council says efforts to tackle pigeons on Mere Street have failed, with businesses and residents urged to help.

Diss Town Council says attempts to tackle a long-running pigeon problem in the town centre have so far failed to deliver a lasting solution.

Residents and businesses have raised concerns about the amount of pigeon droppings and feathers accumulating along Mere Street.

The council has previously tried a range of measures to discourage the birds, including ultrasonic deterrent devices and employing a professional falconer to fly hawks through the town centre.

However, mayor Declan Craggs says those efforts have not solved the problem.

The authority says the large number of birds means a coordinated approach is now needed involving councils, businesses and the public.

It has been using a specialist vacuum to remove feathers but says a mechanical street sweeper is needed to properly clean heavier debris and droppings.

South Norfolk Council has been contacted about street-cleaning arrangements, while businesses are being encouraged to keep their frontages clean and install measures designed to prevent pigeons roosting on buildings.

Residents and visitors are also being asked not to feed the birds.

The town council says everyone doing their part could significantly improve the appearance of Mere Street and it will continue reviewing what further action can be taken.
