Norwich City suffered a dramatic 4-3 defeat at Middlesbrough after fighting back from 3-1 down before conceding a stoppage-time winner.
Norwich City were beaten 4-3 by Middlesbrough after a dramatic seven-goal Championship encounter at the Riverside Stadium.
The Canaries made a perfect start when Mohamed Touré capitalised on a defensive mistake to put them ahead inside the opening minute.
However, Middlesbrough responded almost immediately through Sebastian Berhalter before Amario Cozier-Duberry completed a rapid turnaround to make it 2-1 after just seven minutes.
Berhalter scored his second before half-time to leave Norwich trailing 3-1.
Philippe Clement’s side produced a much stronger response after the break.
Substitute Jovon Makama reduced the deficit in the 70th minute before Jacob Wright struck five minutes later to complete the comeback and make it 3-3.
Norwich appeared to have rescued a point after fighting their way back into the contest, but Middlesbrough had the final say.
Ashley Phillips scored from a set piece in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a dramatic 4-3 victory in front of more than 900 travelling Norwich supporters.
The Canaries now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup.
They travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the third round on Thursday 17 September, with kick-off at 7.30pm.
