Plans to replace Gorleston's historic Ocean Room with a four-storey leisure development and holiday accommodation have divided opinion among residents.
A historic Gorleston entertainment venue which once hosted major bands including Pink Floyd and Blur could be demolished and replaced with a four-storey leisure and holiday accommodation complex.
The Ocean Room, which originally opened as the Floral Hall in 1939, has been a familiar landmark on Gorleston seafront for generations.
The venue closed in 2024 and was subsequently sold by Great Yarmouth Borough Council for £500,000 to Ocean Pavilion, a subsidiary of Bespoke Construction Group.
Developers are now proposing to replace the existing building with a modern complex featuring up to 37 holiday rooms, a children's soft play area, a restaurant and bar, and a wellness centre and spa.
However, the proposals have prompted mixed reactions from residents attending a public consultation.
Some have raised concerns about the height and scale of the proposed building, questioning whether a four-storey development would be appropriate for the seafront.
Others have welcomed the prospect of new leisure facilities and additional investment in the area.
The developer says structural surveys have shown that the existing Ocean Room would require extensive and costly repairs, making restoration economically unviable.
Supporters believe the project could attract more visitors throughout the year and provide a boost to local businesses.
No formal planning application has yet been submitted, with developers continuing to gather feedback from residents before finalising their proposals.
