Norfolk County Council is encouraging single people to consider adoption as nineteen children across the county wait for permanent homes.
Norfolk County Council is encouraging more single people to consider adoption as part of National Adoption Week, challenging the misconception that prospective parents must be in a relationship.
The authority says 19 children in Norfolk are currently waiting to find permanent adoptive families, with more people needed to come forward and explore the possibility of adoption.
Figures show that twelve single people have been approved to adopt children in Norfolk over the past five years.
Among those sharing their experiences is David, who adopted his son in 2021.
He hopes his story will encourage others to consider adoption, particularly those who may have ruled themselves out because they are not married or living with a partner.
The council is highlighting that single people can adopt, provided they can demonstrate the ability to offer a stable, secure and loving home.
Prospective adopters undergo a thorough assessment process, with support and guidance available to help them understand the responsibilities involved.
Adoption teams are keen to hear from people with different backgrounds and life experiences who could provide permanent homes for children needing families.
National Adoption Week runs from 19 to 25 October 2026 and aims to raise awareness of adoption while addressing common misconceptions.
Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Norfolk County Council's adoption service or visit the Adopt East website for information about the process and upcoming information events.
