Lakenham residents are calling for wider road safety improvements amid concerns about speeding, dangerous crossings and a fatal pedestrian collision.
Residents in Lakenham, Norwich, are calling for a wider review of road safety amid growing concerns about speeding vehicles and dangerous conditions for pedestrians.
Norfolk County Council has proposed new traffic-calming measures along Hall Road, including road humps designed to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
However, campaigners believe the improvements should extend beyond one road, with a petition calling for a formal safety assessment of Hall Road, City Road, Corton Road, Lindley Street and the Bracondale and King Street junction.
Residents say speeding motorists, narrow pavements and difficult pedestrian crossings have created safety concerns, particularly around routes used by families and schoolchildren.
City Road resident Joe Jackson has described the street as a commuter shortcut, claiming some drivers regularly ignore its 20mph speed limit.
Local councillor Tom Ludson has welcomed the proposed Hall Road improvements but believes a more comprehensive approach is needed across the neighbourhood.
Concerns have intensified following the death of 64-year-old Peter Bambury, who was struck by a car at a zebra crossing on City Road on 20 December 2025.
An investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.
Campaigners hope the petition will encourage Norfolk County Council to examine traffic speeds, crossing facilities and pedestrian safety throughout Lakenham rather than concentrating improvements on Hall Road alone.
