Norfolk hospitals receive nearly £15 million in government funding to improve urgent care facilities and reduce pressure on emergency departments.
Nearly £15 million of government funding has been announced to improve urgent and emergency care facilities at two of Norfolk's major hospitals.
The James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston will receive £10 million towards a new Urgent Treatment Centre, while the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has been allocated £4.86 million for improvements to its emergency department.
The investment forms part of a wider £140 million government programme designed to increase urgent care capacity and ease pressure on NHS emergency services.
At the James Paget, the new centre will provide dedicated treatment facilities for patients with urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, such as minor injuries and illnesses.
The facility is expected to include ten consultation, treatment and observation rooms, allowing patients to be assessed separately from those requiring emergency care.
Hospital bosses believe the centre could accommodate around a third of patients currently attending the main A&E department.
Meanwhile, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital will use its funding to refurbish its emergency department and create additional capacity for assessing and treating patients.
Ministers say the investment will help hospitals manage increasing demand, improve patient flow and allow emergency teams to concentrate on the most seriously ill patients.
The improvements are intended to support more efficient emergency care across Norfolk and reduce waiting times for patients.
