Free electric blanket testing returns to Norfolk libraries after safety checks revealed sixty per cent of previously tested items failed.
Norfolk residents are being urged to check the safety of their electric blankets, heated throws and portable heaters as colder weather approaches.
Norfolk County Council is supporting a series of free electrical safety testing events across the county, aimed at reducing the risk of fires and accidents in people's homes.
The warning follows concerning results from previous testing sessions, where 60 per cent of electric blankets and heated throws examined failed safety checks.
Many people rely on these appliances to stay warm during the winter months, particularly older residents and those looking to reduce their heating bills.
However, damaged wiring, worn materials and faulty electrical components can present serious fire risks.
Free testing sessions are being organised at libraries across Norfolk, including Sheringham, Caister and Sprowston, giving residents an opportunity to have their equipment inspected.
The events are being supported by Norfolk Trading Standards and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service.
Staff will also be available to provide practical advice about preventing household fires, using electrical appliances safely and recognising potential scams.
Residents are encouraged to inspect electric blankets regularly for visible damage, including frayed cables, scorch marks and unusual smells.
Anyone unable to attend a testing session can ask a friend, relative or neighbour to take their blanket along on their behalf.
Further information about upcoming sessions is available through Norfolk County Council and local libraries.
