Norwich’s historic Chapelfield Gardens bandstand has been restored with specialist repairs, improved accessibility, new power points and adjustable lighting installed.
The restoration of Norwich’s historic Chapelfield Gardens bandstand has been completed, giving the Victorian structure a new lease of life.
The timber bandstand dates from around 1899 and has been used for concerts, performances and community events for more than 125 years.
Norwich City Council carried out the project with support from Historic England after specialist surveys identified deterioration caused by age and wear.
The work included repairs to the historic timber structure, replacement of damaged sections, improvements to the deck and restoration of the steps and surrounding areas.
Accessibility has also been improved as part of the scheme, making it easier for more performers and visitors to use the bandstand.
New electricity points have been installed to support performances and events, alongside adjustable lighting which will allow the space to be used more flexibly.
Historic England provided more than £315,000 towards the project through its Heritage at Risk Capital Fund.
Chapelfield Gardens is Norwich’s oldest surviving ornamental public park, with a history stretching back centuries.
The council says the restoration will help ensure the bandstand can continue to host music, performances and community events for future generations.
