Anglian Water Tackles Whitlingham Odour Problems

Wednesday, 19 August 2026 18:38

Anglian Water says work is progressing to reduce long-running odours from its Whitlingham sewage treatment works near Norwich and Thorpe.

Anglian Water says it is making progress in tackling long-running problems with unpleasant smells from its Whitlingham sewage treatment works near Norwich.

Residents in nearby Thorpe St Andrew have complained about odours from the site for several years, particularly during periods when weather conditions cause smells to travel towards surrounding homes.

The water company says a programme of work is now under way to reduce the impact on neighbouring communities.

Measures include new odour suppression equipment and the installation of a chemical curtain designed to help prevent smells escaping from parts of the treatment process.

Further improvements are also being planned around areas where sewage sludge is stored and handled, which have been identified as another potential source of odours.

The issue has previously been raised by local councillors following complaints from people living in Thorpe St Andrew and the surrounding area.

Anglian Water says it recognises the impact the problem has had on residents and is continuing to monitor conditions while the improvement work is carried out.

The company has also been investing in wider upgrades at the Whitlingham Water Recycling Centre as part of improvements to wastewater infrastructure serving Norwich and the surrounding area.
