Boaters Urged To Take Fire Care

Monday, 17 August 2026 17:26

People enjoying the Norfolk Broads are being urged to take extra care over fire safety while spending time on boats.

People heading out on the Norfolk Broads are being urged to think carefully about fire safety while enjoying time on the water.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service says around 90 people are involved in boat fires across the UK each year, warning that flames can spread extremely quickly in the confined space of a boat – even when surrounded by water.

With the Broads particularly busy during the summer, firefighters are reminding holidaymakers, boat owners and day-trippers to take a few simple precautions.

Cooking should never be left unattended, while cigarettes and other smoking materials need to be completely extinguished and disposed of safely. Boaters should also make sure escape routes are kept clear and everyone on board knows what to do if a fire breaks out.

Having an emergency plan is particularly important, including knowing how to raise the alarm and how everybody would safely get off the vessel.

The warning forms part of wider safety work on the Broads, where Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has previously worked alongside the Broads Authority and RNLI to promote safer boating and water awareness.

Firefighters say a little preparation can make a major difference, allowing people to enjoy everything the Broads has to offer while keeping themselves, their passengers and other river users safe.
