Major Incident After 16 Norfolk Emergencies

Friday, 14 August 2026 07:03

Norfolk firefighters faced one of their busiest days as multiple fires triggered a major incident across the county on Thursday.

Norfolk firefighters faced an exceptionally busy day on Thursday as 16 simultaneous emergencies led the fire service to declare a major incident.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service made the declaration at around 3.15pm, warning that the number of incidents requiring multiple crews was placing significant pressure on its resources.

One of the most visible incidents was a large fire at Mousehold Heath in Norwich, where huge plumes of smoke could be seen across the city. People were asked to stay away from the Gurney Road area while crews tackled the flames.

By Thursday evening, firefighters said the Mousehold blaze had been surrounded and was well under control, although crews remained at the scene checking for hotspots and damping down.

Elsewhere, firefighters tackled a blaze at Thomas Bullock Primary Academy in Shipdham, where three classrooms were damaged. The school was closed for the summer holidays and no children were believed to have been on site.

Crews were also called to incidents across locations including Kelling, Watton and Wymondham.

The fire service has again urged people to avoid bonfires, disposable barbecues and anything else that could start a fire while Norfolk remains exceptionally dry.
