Drivers Face Huge A47 Diversion

Thursday, 13 August 2026 08:20

Drivers face a lengthy diversion this weekend as part of the A47 eastbound closes overnight west of Norwich for roadworks.

Drivers using the A47 west of Norwich are being warned to allow extra time this weekend because of an overnight closure and lengthy diversion.

National Highways will close the eastbound carriageway between Norwich Road junction and Longwater junction from 10pm on Saturday 15 August until 6am on Sunday 16 August.

The closure forms part of the ongoing A47 improvement scheme between North Tuddenham and Easton.

Eastbound drivers will face a substantial diversion. Traffic will initially be sent west along the A47 to Swaffham, before turning south on the A1065 towards Mundford.

From there, motorists will follow the A134 to Thetford, join the A11 towards Norwich and eventually rejoin the A47.

The official diversion is considerably longer than the section of road being closed and could add significant time to overnight journeys.

National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and allow additional travelling time.

The closure is currently scheduled for one night only, although roadworks can change at short notice.

The work is part of the wider project to upgrade the A47 between North Tuddenham and Easton to dual carriageway, improving the route between Dereham and Norwich.
