Businesses across Norfolk and the East could face tougher water restrictions if the region’s already stretched supplies continue to fall.
Businesses across Norfolk and the wider East of England could face tighter restrictions on water use if supplies continue to come under pressure.
Anglian Water says it is considering the possibility of restrictions on some non-essential commercial water use as the prolonged dry weather continues to affect rivers, reservoirs and groundwater supplies. Any wider restrictions of this kind would require Government approval before they could be introduced.
A hosepipe ban is already in force across Anglian Water’s supply area. It was introduced in July and mainly restricts domestic use, including activities such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling paddling pools with a hosepipe.
The company says the ban initially reduced demand by around 9%, although that saving has since settled at approximately 5% as the hot, dry conditions have continued.
Businesses are already being encouraged to cut unnecessary water use wherever possible. Commercial water consumption accounts for a significant proportion of overall demand, and further restrictions could potentially affect activities such as outdoor cleaning, watering commercial grounds or other non-essential uses.
Anglian Water says teams are continuing to move water around the network, repair leaks and manage supplies, but it is asking customers across the region to keep reducing their use wherever they can.
The company says any decision on additional restrictions would depend on how water resources and weather conditions develop over the coming weeks.
