Nine Homes Rejected Near Yarmouth Port

Monday, 17 August 2026 17:11

Plans for nine homes near Great Yarmouth Port have been rejected amid concerns about industrial noise and losing employment land.

Plans to build nine homes near Great Yarmouth Port have been rejected over concerns about noise and the loss of land considered important to the town's economy.

The proposed development was planned for Portland Lane, close to established industrial and commercial activity around the port.

Planning officers raised concerns that people living in the new homes could experience significant disturbance from nearby businesses, including noise generated during normal port and industrial operations.

One of the issues highlighted was whether residents would be able to comfortably open windows without being affected by noise from surrounding employment uses.

Officers were also concerned about converting land currently identified for employment into housing.

Great Yarmouth's port and surrounding industrial areas remain an important part of the local economy, supporting businesses connected with marine industries, offshore energy, logistics and other commercial activity.

Planning policy seeks to protect suitable employment land where possible, particularly where new residential development could potentially conflict with established businesses.

The application has therefore been refused, meaning the nine homes cannot currently go ahead as proposed.

The decision highlights the challenge of delivering new housing while also protecting Great Yarmouth's working port and the jobs and businesses based around it.
