Work has begun on 127 new social homes in east Norwich, including specialist accommodation and family housing for local residents.
Work has started on a major new housing development in east Norwich which will create 127 new social homes.
The scheme, worth up to £40 million, will transform a former Norfolk County Council-owned brownfield site into a new community, with every home available for social rent.
The development will include 77 homes for people aged 55 and over who are eligible for care and support from Norfolk County Council. These will include 54 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom apartments designed to help residents continue living independently.
A further 22 supported-living homes will be created for adults with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and autistic people. These will consist of 12 apartments and ten bungalows, with support available on site.
The development will also provide 28 family homes for social rent, helping meet wider demand for affordable housing in Norwich.
Norfolk County Council is investing £5.5 million through its Independent Living and Supported Living programmes. The remaining cost will be funded by Places for People, with support from Homes England.
Once complete, Places for People will own and manage all 127 homes.
Council leaders say the development will provide much-needed affordable housing while giving older and disabled residents greater opportunities to live independently within their community.
