North Norfolk District Council is appealing against a decision not to recommend a banking hub for Fakenham.
The authority believes the town’s size, its role as a service centre for a wide rural area and limited public transport options mean its case should be reconsidered.
Fakenham has lost a number of traditional bank branches in recent years, with Nationwide now the only remaining branch-style banking service in the town centre.
LINK, which independently assesses communities to determine whether additional cash services are needed, decided that Fakenham did not currently meet the criteria for a new banking hub.
It says residents still have access to banking and cash services through the town’s Post Office, Nationwide and free-to-use cash machines.
However, councillors argue those facilities do not fully reflect the needs of people and businesses who travel into Fakenham from surrounding rural communities.
The council has previously supported campaigns for improved banking provision in the town and is now asking LINK to look again at its assessment.
Banking hubs provide shared facilities for customers of several major banks, including counter services and scheduled visits from individual banking providers.
Similar hubs are already operating elsewhere in North Norfolk, including Holt and North Walsham, with a hub also planned for Cromer.
