Police Warn Parents Over Illegal E-Bikes

Thursday, 20 August 2026 09:54

Norfolk Police is urging parents to check their children’s e-bikes amid growing concerns about illegally modified machines capable of high speeds.

Norfolk Police is warning parents about the dangers of illegally modified e-bikes as officers continue to tackle their use across the county.

The force says some electric bikes are being altered so they can travel significantly faster than the limits permitted for road-legal electrically assisted pedal cycles.

Under UK rules, a legal e-bike must have pedals which can be used to propel it and an electric motor with a maximum power output of 250 watts.

The motor must also stop providing assistance when the bike reaches 15.5mph.

Bikes which do not meet those requirements can legally be classed as motorcycles or mopeds, meaning rules covering registration, tax, insurance, driving licences and protective helmets may apply.

Police are particularly concerned about young people using modified bikes on roads and in public places without understanding the potential consequences.

Officers are urging parents and carers to check bikes bought or used by their children, including whether speed restrictions or throttle systems have been altered.

Norfolk Police has been carrying out operations targeting illegal e-bikes, with machines seized in Norwich and other parts of the county.

The force says legal e-bikes can provide a useful and environmentally friendly way to travel when they are used responsibly, but modifications designed to increase their speed can significantly increase the risk to riders and other road users.
