King’s Lynn’s historic Custom House has closed for a £2.5 million renovation programme including roof repairs and major accessibility improvements.
King’s Lynn’s Grade I-listed Custom House has closed as work gets under way on a £2.5 million programme of renovation and conservation.
The 17th-century landmark, which stands on the town’s historic waterfront, is expected to remain closed for around 12 months while specialist work is carried out.
The project will include repairs and conservation work to the roof, stonework, windows and distinctive cupola, while retaining as much of the building’s historic fabric as possible.
Major accessibility improvements are also planned.
A new platform lift will be installed to provide access to the first-floor Long Room, alongside an accessible toilet on the ground floor and improvements to other facilities within the building.
The Custom House was designed by local architect Henry Bell and completed in 1683. It was originally built as a merchants’ exchange before later becoming a customs house.
The work forms part of the wider regeneration of King’s Lynn’s riverfront and is being supported through government Town Deal funding.
Once the renovation is complete, the council hopes the building will provide more flexible public space, including exhibitions, heritage displays and occasional events, while protecting one of the town’s most important historic buildings.
