A major incident remains in place as firefighters battle a huge wildfire at Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast.
Firefighters are continuing to battle a major wildfire on the Suffolk coast after a large blaze spread rapidly across Dunwich Heath, prompting a major incident to be declared.
Around 120 firefighters are now involved in the operation as crews work in difficult conditions to contain the fire, which has already burned across an area equivalent to around 140 football pitches. Officials say the blaze could continue burning for at least another 36 hours because of the combination of dry vegetation, strong coastal winds and ongoing drought conditions.
Hundreds of people were evacuated overnight from nearby homes and holiday accommodation, including a holiday park with around 200 caravans. Several roads remain closed, and residents are being urged to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed because of heavy smoke.
The fire is burning several miles from Sizewell B nuclear power station. Emergency services have stressed there is no current risk to the site, although the situation remains under constant review.
The wildfire has also affected parts of the surrounding heathland and nearby nature reserves, with concerns over damage to wildlife and protected habitats. Authorities say the prolonged hot, dry weather has left vegetation exceptionally vulnerable, and they are reminding people to avoid any activity that could accidentally start further fires.
