Visitors Urged To Give Seals Space

Tuesday, 4 August 2026 09:23

People visiting Norfolk's coast are being reminded to stay well away from seals following repeated reports of disturbance.

Beachgoers visiting the Norfolk coast are being urged to keep their distance from seals following repeated reports of people approaching the animals too closely.

Friends of Horsey Seals says the problem at Horsey and Winterton has been relentless, with visitors ignoring advice in an attempt to take photographs or get a closer look.

The charity warns that human disturbance can cause seals significant stress, forcing them to move unnecessarily and use valuable energy that they need for resting, feeding and caring for their young. In some cases, frightened seals can also injure themselves or become separated from their pups.

Conservationists are reminding people that seals are wild animals and should never be approached, touched or surrounded. They recommend staying at least 100 metres away and keeping dogs on leads when visiting beaches where seals are present.

Friends of Horsey Seals says responsible behaviour by visitors is essential to protect one of Norfolk's most important wildlife populations, particularly during periods when seals are resting on beaches.

The charity is asking anyone visiting Horsey, Winterton or other parts of the Norfolk coast to enjoy the wildlife from a safe distance and follow any guidance provided by volunteers and information signs.
