Three Jailed Over Norwich Manslaughter

Monday, 6 July 2026 11:22

Three men have been jailed after the fatal assault of Matthew Griggs in Norwich, bringing a lengthy court case to a close.

Three men have been sentenced to prison after being convicted of the manslaughter of Matthew Griggs following an assault in Norwich nearly two years ago.

Jonathan Bristow and John McDonnell were each jailed for eight years after being found guilty of manslaughter. Daniel Carroll received a seven-year sentence for the same offence, with an additional three years added after he was also convicted of an unrelated robbery.

The case relates to an incident on Cats Hill in Norwich in September 2023. Emergency services were called after Matthew Griggs was assaulted in the street. Despite receiving medical treatment, he later died from his injuries.

Following a detailed police investigation, the three defendants were charged and later convicted by a jury. The sentencing brings to an end a lengthy legal process that has seen detectives gather evidence, interview witnesses and present the case before the courts.

During sentencing, the judge highlighted the seriousness of the attack and its devastating impact on Matthew's family, who have had to live with the consequences of his death since 2023.

Norfolk Police have welcomed the outcome, thanking everyone who assisted the investigation. Officers also paid tribute to the witnesses who came forward to help establish exactly what happened on the night of the assault, leading to the convictions of all three men.
