Workers facing redundancy at British Sugar’s Cantley factory are being offered employment support as consultation continues over its proposed closure.

Workers facing redundancy at British Sugar’s Cantley factory are being offered support to help them find new employment.

British Sugar is currently consulting on proposals to close the historic Norfolk plant, putting 104 jobs at risk.

The company has proposed ending production at Cantley in February 2027, with operations transferred to its other factories. No final decision is expected until the consultation process with employees and trade unions has been completed.

Norfolk County Council says support is available for workers affected by the proposals through employment and skills services.

Help on offer includes advice about benefits and financial support, access to training opportunities and assistance with finding and applying for new jobs.

Workers can also receive practical help with CVs, job applications and preparing for interviews as they consider alternative employment.

The proposed closure of the Cantley site follows more than a century of sugar production in the village and has raised concerns about the impact on employees and the wider local economy.

British Sugar has blamed challenging market conditions, including low sugar prices, high energy costs and falling demand, for the proposal.

The county council says it will work with affected employees and other organisations to provide support as the consultation process continues.
