Suffolk Village Plans Symbolic Independence Vote Over RAF Barnham Asylum Proposals

Monday, 26 October 2026 at 07:51

Suffolk villagers have backed a symbolic independence referendum as opposition continues to proposed asylum accommodation at RAF Barnham near Thetford.

Residents in the Suffolk village of Barnham have voted to hold a symbolic referendum on leaving the United Kingdom in protest against plans to accommodate asylum seekers at a nearby former RAF base.

The decision follows a public meeting at Barnham Village Hall on Saturday 24 October, attended by around 80 residents, with only seven voting against the proposal.

The Home Office is considering using RAF Barnham, near Thetford, to accommodate up to 931 asylum seekers, a reduction from an earlier proposal for 1,250 places.

The plans have prompted protests and objections from residents and local authorities concerned about the potential impact on public services and the surrounding community.

Barnham Parish Council chairman John Bauer believes a symbolic referendum could attract national attention and demonstrate the strength of local opposition.

The idea follows a similar vote in Piddington, Oxfordshire, where residents overwhelmingly supported a symbolic declaration of independence in September.

However, any referendum in Barnham would have no legal standing and would not result in the village leaving the United Kingdom.

A working group is now expected to consider how and when a vote could take place.

The Home Office says it recognises the strength of local feeling and is listening carefully to concerns.

Officials maintain that former military sites could provide a more cost-effective alternative to hotel accommodation.

No final decision has been made about using RAF Barnham.
