Royal Dog’s Shipwreck Story Revealed

Tuesday, 21 July 2026 10:24

The extraordinary story of a royal dog reportedly lost in a historic Norfolk shipwreck is being explored at Norwich History Festival.

The extraordinary story of a royal dog reportedly lost in one of Norfolk’s most famous shipwrecks is being explored as part of Norwich History Festival.

Mumper, a mixed-breed dog associated with James, Duke of York – the future King James II – was reputedly aboard the Gloucester when the warship sank off the Norfolk coast in 1682.

The Gloucester struck the Leman and Ower sandbanks around 28 miles off Great Yarmouth on 6 May and sank within an hour. An estimated 130 to 250 people lost their lives, although the Duke survived.

New research has examined accounts of Mumper’s fate and how the story developed after the disaster.

One account claimed the dog fought for survival in the water with royal physician Sir Charles Scarborough as both attempted to cling to the same piece of wreckage.

Researchers say stories about Mumper were subsequently retold and adapted by writers, becoming part of wider political commentary surrounding the disaster and the controversial actions of the future king.

The research provides a different perspective on the Gloucester, showing how even the reported fate of a dog could be used to shape political narratives in 17th-century Britain.

The story is being highlighted as part of Norwich History Festival.
