A rare David Hockney print discovered hidden inside a donated book in Norwich has sold at auction for more than £41,000.
A rare print by celebrated British artist David Hockney has sold for more than £41,000 after being discovered in a Norwich charity shop.
The artwork had remained hidden inside a donated book for 46 years before being spotted by a volunteer at a Salvation Army charity shop.
The print, dating from 1979, was recognised as potentially valuable and sent for specialist examination before being offered for sale at auction.
It eventually fetched more than £41,000, providing an unexpected financial boost for the charity.
The money raised from the sale will support the Salvation Army’s work helping vulnerable people and communities across the UK.
Hockney is one of Britain’s most internationally recognised living artists, with his paintings, drawings and prints regularly commanding significant prices at auction.
The remarkable discovery highlights the valuable and unusual items that can sometimes find their way into charity shop donations.
Staff and volunteers have welcomed the result, with the artwork turning an ordinary donated book into a major fundraising success.
The identity of the person who originally donated the book is not known, meaning the print’s full journey before arriving at the Norwich shop remains something of a mystery.
After spending more than four decades hidden between its pages, the artwork will now begin a new chapter with its buyer while generating thousands of pounds for charity.
