Police Raise Concerns Over RAF Barnham Plans

Tuesday, 4 August 2026 17:16

Norfolk and Suffolk Police say asylum accommodation plans at RAF Barnham could seriously affect specialist police training.

Norfolk and Suffolk Police have warned that Government proposals to house up to 3,750 asylum seekers at RAF Barnham, near Thetford, could have a significant impact on specialist police training.

The two forces currently use the former RAF site for a range of operational training activities and say being required to vacate the facility within a matter of weeks would be unrealistic.

Police leaders have told the Home Office they would need up to six months to identify and prepare a suitable alternative location, warning that a rushed move could disrupt specialist training programmes and affect operational readiness.

The concerns have been raised as part of the ongoing discussions over the Government's plans to use the site as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

The Home Office has acknowledged the issues raised by the police and says the emergency service concerns are being considered as the proposal is assessed.

The plans for RAF Barnham have prompted debate locally, with supporters arguing the site could help meet accommodation pressures, while opponents have questioned the impact on local services, infrastructure and existing users of the former military base.

No final decision has yet been announced, and discussions between the Home Office, emergency services and other organisations are continuing.
