Norfolk Police say officers faced significant aggression during disorder in Thetford as investigations into the incident continue.
Norfolk Police say officers were subjected to significant aggression while responding to anti-immigration disorder in Thetford on Wednesday evening.
The force was called following reports of disorder linked to claims that people were attempting to enter a property. As officers worked to restore order, police say they came under sustained aggression from some members of the crowd.
Two officers were injured during the incident, including one who suffered what police described as a serious bite. Both officers received medical treatment.
Following the disorder, some witnesses claimed officers had been heavy-handed in their response. It has also been alleged that an incapacitant spray, similar to pepper spray, was used on a woman using a mobility scooter.
Norfolk Police say officers are trained to use force only when it is necessary, proportionate and lawful, and have defended their actions in what they describe as a challenging and fast-moving situation. The force says all use-of-force incidents are subject to established scrutiny and review procedures.
Investigations into the events of Wednesday night are continuing, and police are appealing for anyone with information, photographs or video footage to come forward.
The force has urged people to avoid speculation while inquiries remain ongoing and has reiterated that violence and disorder towards emergency service workers will not be tolerated.
