A new bridge on the upgraded A47 has been named after Norfolk road safety campaigner Valerie Knights, who helped crash victims.
A new bridge built as part of the major A47 dualling scheme east of Norwich has been named in honour of a local road safety campaigner.
Knights Bridge, between Blofield and North Burlingham, commemorates Valerie Knights, who spent decades helping people involved in crashes close to her home.
Mrs Knights lived beside the A47 at North Burlingham, close to what was previously regarded as an accident blackspot.
Over the years she went to the aid of more than 100 people involved in collisions, often arriving with first-aid equipment, blankets and other supplies.
She also campaigned for improvements to road safety along the route and was awarded an MBE for her wider community service in 1994.
Mrs Knights died in April 2022 at the age of 94.
Her daughter Carol Charles attended the official naming of the bridge and said her mother would have been very proud of the honour.
The new structure forms part of National Highways’ scheme to dual the A47 between Blofield and North Burlingham.
The upgraded 1.6-mile section is now open to traffic, with remaining work including local road surfacing, new cycle routes and landscaping.
National Highways says naming the bridge after Mrs Knights provides a lasting tribute to her decades of service to the local community.
