A new mulching system is helping 40,000 recently planted trees survive hot, dry conditions at a new woodland near King’s Lynn.

A new mulching system is helping around 40,000 recently planted trees survive the hot and dry weather at a new community woodland near King’s Lynn.

The 37-acre Wigenhall Wood, near the village of Wigenhall St Germans, officially opened to the public at the weekend and forms part of Norfolk County Council’s plans to create more woodland across the county.

Young trees can be particularly vulnerable during prolonged periods without significant rainfall because their developing root systems are unable to reach water deeper underground.

To give the newly planted woodland a better chance of becoming established, a layer of mulch is being used around the trees. The material helps the soil retain moisture by reducing evaporation while also limiting competition from weeds and other vegetation.

Norfolk County Council says the approach is helping protect thousands of saplings during the recent spell of unusually hot and dry weather.

As the woodland matures, it is expected to create new habitats for wildlife while providing an accessible green space for local residents.

The council says projects such as Wigenhall Wood are a long-term investment, with the benefits becoming increasingly visible as the trees grow over the coming decades.

The new woodland is intended to provide a lasting natural environment for wildlife, local communities and future generations.
