Memorials Stolen From Norfolk Church

Wednesday, 5 August 2026 18:12

Police are investigating after copper memorials were stolen and gravestones damaged at a church near Swaffham.

Police are appealing for information after copper memorials were stolen and several gravestones were damaged at a church near Swaffham.

The incident happened at St Botolph's Church in Shingham, where officers believe the damage occurred at around 2am on Friday.

Three gravestones were damaged during the incident. Police say five copper memorial roses and a bespoke copper memorial plaque were stolen from the churchyard.

Investigators also believe another gravestone was targeted using an angle grinder, causing further damage to the memorial.

The theft has caused significant distress to the families whose loved ones are buried at the church, with police describing the offences as particularly upsetting because they involve personal memorials.

Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the area during the early hours of Friday, or who may have seen suspicious vehicles or people, to come forward. They are also asking scrapyards and metal dealers to be vigilant in case anyone attempts to sell the distinctive copper items.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is urged to contact Norfolk Police.
