Great Yarmouth MP Rupert Lowe is facing criticism after comments he made about the Dunblane massacre during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
The Restore Britain leader was discussing UK handgun laws when he referred to the 1996 tragedy as “a murder up in Dunblane”. When asked by Rogan whether it was “one murder”, Lowe replied: “One murder.”
The remarks have been widely criticised as insensitive and factually wrong. The Dunblane massacre saw 16 children and their teacher killed at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland. The tragedy led to the Snowdrop Campaign and major changes to UK gun laws, including a ban on most handguns in 1997.
Scottish politicians have urged Lowe to apologise, saying the comments were disrespectful to the victims, their families and the wider Dunblane community.
A spokesperson for Restore Britain has said Lowe was referring to Dunblane as a single incident, rather than seeking to minimise the impact of the tragedy.
The row comes as Lowe continues a media tour in the United States.
