Great Northern passengers face timetable changes between King’s Lynn and Ely as prolonged dry weather causes problems with railway track conditions.
Rail passengers travelling between King’s Lynn and Ely are being warned of disruption from Monday 3 August because of the continuing effects of hot and dry weather.
Great Northern services on the route will operate to an amended timetable after prolonged dry conditions caused peat beneath sections of the railway to shrink.
The movement of the ground has left parts of the track uneven, meaning trains cannot safely travel at their normal speeds.
Speed restrictions have therefore been introduced and are expected to remain in place until conditions improve and trains can once again operate normally.
The amended timetable is designed to give passengers greater certainty while the restrictions remain, rather than services experiencing repeated delays throughout the day.
Passengers using the line are being advised to check their journey before travelling, particularly those making connections at Ely for services towards Norwich, Cambridge and other destinations.
The Fenland landscape crossed by the railway contains areas of peat, which can shrink significantly during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather and affect the stability of the track above.
Railway teams will continue monitoring conditions and carrying out work where necessary.
Passengers should check the latest Great Northern journey information before travelling from 3 August.
