Strike action by Great Yarmouth waste and street-cleaning workers has been suspended today while last-minute pay negotiations continue between sides.
Strike action by waste and street-cleaning workers in Great Yarmouth has been suspended following last-minute talks over pay.
Members of Unite employed by Great Yarmouth Services had been due to walk out on Wednesday 26 August as part of an ongoing dispute with the council-owned company.
However, the union says its members agreed to suspend the action to allow further negotiations to take place in an attempt to reach an agreement.
The dispute involves workers including refuse collectors, street cleaners, landscapers and grave diggers.
Unite has been seeking a 20% pay increase, arguing that many employees are paid only slightly above the minimum wage and earn less than people carrying out similar jobs in neighbouring areas.
Great Yarmouth Services previously offered a 3.3% increase and has described the union’s demand as unreasonable.
Workers have already staged several days of industrial action during August, affecting services across Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and surrounding communities.
Further strikes remain scheduled for Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August.
Unite says those walkouts will go ahead if negotiations fail to produce an offer which can be put to its members.
Talks between the two sides are continuing.
