Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is forecasting a budget overspend as emergency incidents continue to rise across the county.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is forecasting an overspend of more than £1 million this financial year as demand for emergency responses continues to grow.
The service says a sharp rise in incidents linked to extreme weather, water rescues and increasingly complex emergencies has significantly increased operational costs. Fire chiefs report that pump call-outs have risen by 73% over the past five years, placing additional pressure on crews and resources.
The recent spell of hot, dry weather has also led to a surge in outdoor fires and wildfires across Norfolk, requiring lengthy deployments and additional staffing.
Higher payments to on-call firefighters, overtime costs and the need to provide standby cover have all contributed to the expected overspend.
A report to Norfolk County Council says measures are now being considered to help control spending for the remainder of the financial year. These include tighter approval processes for expenditure and reducing or delaying non-essential spending where possible.
Council leaders say protecting frontline emergency response remains the priority, while ensuring the fire service continues to operate within its overall budget.
The figures highlight the growing financial pressures facing emergency services as climate-related incidents and demand for specialist rescues continue to increase across the county.
