Crews Monitor Haystack Fire Near Swaffham

Tuesday, 11 August 2026 08:40

Firefighters remain at the scene of a large haystack fire near Swaffham as crews continue checking the area for hotspots.

Firefighters are continuing to monitor a field fire near Swaffham after a large haystack caught alight on Sunday evening.

Several fire appliances were initially sent to the scene as crews worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading across the surrounding farmland.

One fire crew remains at the site, checking the haystack and surrounding area for hotspots that could cause the fire to flare up again.

Haystack fires can continue to smoulder for a considerable time after the main flames have been extinguished, particularly during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather.

The incident comes as Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service continues to warn people about the exceptionally high risk of outdoor fires across the county.

Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid using barbecues in areas of dry grass or vegetation and to postpone bonfires until conditions improve.

Firefighters say vegetation across Norfolk remains extremely dry, meaning even a small fire or spark can spread rapidly and develop into a much larger incident.

Crews have dealt with a series of field, grassland and woodland fires in recent weeks, adding significant pressure to the service during the prolonged dry spell.
