Colman’s Mustard Put Up For Sale

Friday, 28 August 2026 16:03

Norwich-born Colman’s Mustard has been put up for sale as Unilever seeks to address competition concerns over a planned merger.

One of Norwich’s best-known brands, Colman’s Mustard, has been put up for sale.

Owner Unilever has confirmed it is marketing the historic brand and associated assets to potential buyers ahead of the planned combination of its food business with American company McCormick.

The move is intended to address possible competition concerns because McCormick already owns rival mustard brand French’s.

Investment bank Rothschild has reportedly been appointed to find potential buyers, although no valuation for Colman’s has been disclosed.

Unilever says discussions are ongoing and that operations are continuing as normal.

Colman’s has deep roots in Norfolk and was founded by Jeremiah Colman at Stoke Holy Cross in 1814.

Production later moved to Carrow in Norwich in 1858, where the company became one of the city’s best-known employers and landmarks.

The Norwich factory remained in operation for around 160 years before production at the site ended in 2019.

Although manufacturing moved away from the city, Colman’s has retained strong links with Norfolk, including sourcing mustard from growers in the region.

The wider Unilever and McCormick deal is currently being considered by competition regulators and is expected to create one of the world’s largest food businesses.
