Broads Visitors Warned Over Propeller Dangers

Thursday, 27 August 2026 08:42

Visitors to the Norfolk Broads are being warned about boat propellers after rangers reported seeing several dangerous behaviours on waterways.

Visitors to the Norfolk Broads are being urged to take extra care around boat propellers following reports of potentially dangerous behaviour on the waterways.

The Broads Authority says its rangers have seen people jumping from boats, sitting with their legs dangling over the side and entering the water close to motor vessels.

There have also been concerns about people using inflatables around boats, with towable inflatables such as ringos not permitted on the Broads.

The Authority says propellers can cause devastating injuries and is reminding boat users never to enter the water close to the rear of a motor boat while its engine is running.

People should also never reverse a boat towards somebody in the water.

Previous incidents on the Broads have resulted in serious injuries and fatalities involving boat propellers, highlighting the potential consequences when people enter the water close to moving vessels.

Rangers are particularly keen to reinforce the message during the busy summer holiday period, when thousands of visitors take to the waterways.

The Broads Authority says boating remains a safe and enjoyable way to explore the area when basic precautions are followed and is encouraging visitors to make sure everyone on board understands the risks before setting off.
