Norwich Could Need Almost 3,000 Electric Vehicle Switches Every Year

Friday, 30 October 2026 at 08:28

Norwich City Council says almost 3,000 vehicles each year would need to switch to electric under its 2045 climate plan.

Norwich City Council says almost 3,000 vehicles a year would need to switch to electric power if the city is to meet its long-term climate ambitions.

The figures are contained in a draft Norwich Energy Plan, which outlines how the city could achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045.

According to the proposals, approximately 89 per cent of vehicles registered in Norwich would need to be electric by that date.

That would mean an average of 2,969 vehicles switching from petrol or diesel to electric power every year.

The council estimates there are currently more than 66,000 registered vehicles in Norwich, but only a relatively small proportion are fully electric.

One of the biggest challenges is providing affordable and convenient charging facilities, particularly for residents who do not have driveways or private parking spaces.

Around half of Norwich households rely on on-street parking, making access to cheaper home charging more difficult.

The council is exploring ways to expand charging infrastructure and make electric vehicle ownership more practical and affordable.

However, officials have stressed that the proposals do not mean residents will be forced to replace their existing vehicles.

The draft energy plan also includes measures to improve home energy efficiency, encourage renewable power generation and reduce emissions from buildings.

Council leaders say achieving the targets will require cooperation from residents, businesses and other organisations over the coming years.
