Norwich Shop Occupancy Reaches Highest Level in 18 Years

Tuesday, 27 October 2026 at 21:16

Norwich city centre shop occupancy reaches 90.2 per cent as latest survey records the lowest vacancy rate in eighteen years.

Norwich city centre has recorded its highest level of retail occupancy in at least 18 years, according to new figures released by Norwich City Council.

The latest city centre retail survey, carried out during September and October 2026, found that 90.2 per cent of retail units are now occupied.

The vacancy rate has fallen from 15.2 per cent in September 2025 to just 9.8 per cent this year.

It is the first time since records began at least 18 years ago that more than nine in ten city centre shops have been occupied.

The amount of vacant retail floorspace has also decreased, falling from 11.8 per cent to 10.4 per cent over the past twelve months.

Within Norwich's main shopping areas, including Gentleman's Walk, Chantry Place and Castle Quarter, vacancy rates have fallen to 8.8 per cent.

Areas known for independent businesses have also performed strongly, with vacancies dropping to 9.5 per cent.

Although the demolition of empty units at Anglia Square has influenced the overall figures, improvements have been recorded across all retail areas.

Norwich City Council says the results demonstrate continued confidence among retailers and investors in the city.

Recent investment in Norwich Castle, Hay Hill and The Halls, alongside the growth of leisure and hospitality businesses, has helped strengthen the city centre's appeal.

The council believes Norwich's combination of independent shops, national retailers, restaurants and cultural attractions is helping it remain a popular destination for shoppers and visitors.
