Norwich residents are being consulted on new rental licensing rules designed to improve housing safety and property management standards citywide.
Norwich residents are being invited to have their say on plans to improve housing standards in the city's private rented sector.
Norwich City Council has launched a public consultation on two proposed licensing schemes designed to make rented properties safer, better maintained and more effectively managed.
The first would introduce additional licensing across Norwich for houses in multiple occupation, where three or four people from two or more households share facilities such as kitchens or bathrooms.
The second proposal would introduce selective licensing for privately rented properties in four city wards: Nelson, Mile Cross, Sewell and Town Close.
Under the proposed arrangements, landlords of affected properties would need to obtain licences and meet conditions covering gas and electrical safety, fire precautions, maintenance and property management.
The council says the changes would help identify problems earlier, protect tenants and ensure responsible landlords are not disadvantaged by those failing to maintain acceptable standards.
The proposals follow an independent review of private rented housing conditions in Norwich.
If approved, the licensing schemes could operate for up to five years, although no final decision has been made.
The consultation runs until Sunday 24 January 2027, with findings expected to be considered by councillors next spring.
Residents, landlords and businesses can submit their views through the Get Talking Norwich website at gettalking.norwich.gov.uk/discretionarylicensing.
Any approved schemes would not begin before late summer 2027.
