Ten new full-time firefighters are joining Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service after completing an intensive 13-week training programme.
The recruits are the first new group of wholetime firefighters to start in Norfolk for three years and will now join crews at the county’s five full-time stations in Norwich, King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth.
Their training included the use of specialist breathing apparatus, responding to road traffic collisions and providing trauma care, alongside the fitness, stamina and resilience needed for frontline emergency work.
The group comes from a wide range of professional backgrounds, including policing, education, fitness coaching, healthcare and self-employment.
After completing their final assessments, the firefighters officially passed out on Friday and will now continue their development while working alongside experienced crews.
Wholetime firefighters work rotating shifts throughout the year, providing 24-hour emergency cover seven days a week.
Chief Fire Officer Ceri Sumner praised the recruits for the hard work, determination and teamwork they had shown during their training and welcomed them formally into the service.
The fire service says it is not currently recruiting more wholetime firefighters, although opportunities remain available for people interested in joining as on-call firefighters.
