Norfolk residents are urged to prepare for flash flooding as heavy summer downpours can quickly overwhelm drains after dry weather.
Norfolk residents are being reminded that flooding is not just a winter risk, with experts warning that intense summer downpours can cause significant damage in a matter of minutes.
Norfolk County Council is encouraging households and businesses to be prepared for flash flooding, particularly following long periods of hot, dry weather. When heavy rain falls on baked-hard ground, water is often unable to soak away quickly, increasing the risk of surface water flooding and overwhelmed drainage systems.
Figures released by the council show its flood investigation team received around 100 reports of flooding during last summer. Of those, 54 incidents involved floodwater entering homes or businesses, highlighting the impact that sudden summer storms can have across the county.
The council is urging residents to take simple steps to protect their properties, including checking drains and gutters are clear, knowing how to switch off utilities if flooding occurs, and preparing a personal flood plan. People living in areas that have flooded previously are also encouraged to sign up for flood warnings where available.
Although winter is traditionally associated with flooding, climate experts say heavier and more intense rainfall events are becoming increasingly common during the summer months. Norfolk County Council says being prepared can help reduce damage, improve safety and ensure communities are better equipped to respond when severe weather strikes.
