Sheringham Bus Shelter Demolished

Monday, 13 July 2026 15:24

Sheringham’s much-loved 1950s bus shelter has been demolished following years of opposition and debate over plans to redevelop Station Approach.

A much-loved 1950s bus shelter in Sheringham has been demolished following years of opposition from residents and campaigners.

People gathered at the brick shelter on Station Approach to say goodbye before contractors removed the structure, which had served generations of passengers near the town’s railway stations.

The shelter became the focus of a long-running campaign after proposals emerged to replace it as part of improvements to the surrounding transport interchange. More than 3,000 people supported a petition calling for it to be retained, while campaigners staged a nine-day occupation in December 2025 to prevent its demolition.

Sheringham Town Council initially withdrew its backing for the scheme by six votes to five. However, councillors later decided in June 2026 that demolition should proceed to enable the future redevelopment of Otterndorf Green.

The original county council proposals had a budget of £580,000 after costs increased to include a bespoke shelter and changes requested following public consultation. Plans included wider pavements, improved accessibility, real-time passenger information, cycle parking, seating and landscaping.

Norfolk County Council said the old shelter created a narrow and congested section of pavement that presented accessibility and safety concerns for passengers and pedestrians.

Campaigners said the structure was an important part of Sheringham’s history and community identity.
